Final Friday?

The Galaxy went through one of the club's final training sessions before Monday's roster and salary compliance day, meaning that this could be the final day of training with the Galaxy for some players.

For those that don't know, the Galaxy can have no more than 24 players (20 senior roster and four developmental roster spots) under contract by the end of the day on Monday and must be compliant with the league's salary budget.

Even with the deadline looming, today's training was not outwardly different than any other, with the players working on tactics and possession before breaking out to do fitness work and finishing with crossing and finishing drills.

In the fitness portion of training, the field players were paired up 1v1 with the coaches keeping track of who won each race.
While they were running, the goalkeepers were working on hitting the ball first time on pass backs, with all four keepers, including Donovan Ricketts, who participated in the entire session after missing the PPC because of a hamstring injury, trying to hit the ball with either foot to a stationary target, which was Ian Feuer.

Before the session closed with some crossing and finishing, with Sean Franklin, Chris Klein and Kyle Patterson all whipping balls into the box.

Bryan Jordan missed Friday's training with a foot injury while Eddie Lewis was also out with the hamstring injury that he picked up on Saturday against Suwon. Both players remained inside doing rehab work with members of the medical team.

While Eddie was not on the field this afternoon, he will be in Santa Monica on Saturday, March 7 to take part in the EA Sports FIFA Interactive World Cup on the 3rd Street Promenade and meet with the gamers.

Galaxy to Host Colorado in Open Cup Play-In Game

The Galaxy's road to a third U.S. Open Cup title will begin at The Home Depot Center on Tuesday, April 7 when they host the Colorado Rapids. The game will kick off at 8 p.m. and Galaxy season ticket holders will be able to use their Bonus Game 2 ticket.

This will be the second straight season in which the Galaxy host Colorado in an Open Cup Play-In Game. Last year, the Rapids claimed a 1-0 win, with the Rapids scoring the game’s only goal in the 82nd minute. The Galaxy, who won the Open Cup in 2001 and 2005, first participated in an Open Cup Play-In Game in 2007, when they defeated Columbus and New York to qualify for the Third Round of the Open Cup, where they were defeated by the Richmond Kickers.

The two sides are now scheduled to meet three times in the month of April, with the Galaxy also hosting the Rapids in league play on Saturday, April 4 and traveling to Colorado on Saturday, April 25.

Moving Pictures

The last couple of days at The Home Depot Center have been interesting, and Telemundo has been here to capture most of it. But what they didn't shoot, we did. We know how you love the videos.

First, Telemundo-52 came out on Wednesday to find out who's the Galaxy's best gamer. The game of choice was Mario Kart Wii, a highly popular game amongst the guys. We won't give the awnser away, but find out for yourself Sunday at 11 p.m. on Marcador Final, which is hosted by Galaxy Deportivo personality Alejandro Navarro and Mauricio Cardenas.

Also,on Thursday, Alex Sabillon got hooked up with the LA Galaxy through Mun2, a Telemundo-owned station. Sabillon, a young man from Texas, had the opportunity to train with some of the Galaxy players. He got some advice from Kleiny and went up against Omar on a one-on-one drill. He also played tennis soccer with Dema and was given a tour of the stadaium and facilities. Those he have what it takes to play for the Galaxy? Find out when the show airs later this summer.

Finally, the team played a closed-door scrimmage against UCLA on Wednesday. Even though it was closed-door, a few VIPs manage to sneak in. Among them, former Galaxy goalkeeper Jorge Campos, who came with good friend Claudio Suarez, and U.S. National Team Head Coach Bob Bradley.

Enjoy these highlights of the match, which include Omar González's first goal in a Galaxy jersey.

Five Players Waived; Number Changes

The Galaxy waived five players today, with Ely Allen, Steve Cronin, Brandon McDonald, Mike Randolph and Troy Roberts being let go. You can read the full press release at lagalaxy.com and we thank all five players for their service to the club.

Additionally, with the roster shrinking, a number of new squad numbers have been made available, with five guys already taking advantage of the vacancies.

Donovan Ricketts will now wear #1
Todd Dunivant will now wear #2
Omar Gonzalez will now wear #4
Josh Saunders will now wear #12
and Mike Magee will now wear #18 (which he debuted at the PPC)

Wednesday Holdover

We'll be announcing some roster moves in the next couple of hours, but in the meantime we thought that we would share a couple of notes to pass along from the past couple of days...

  • As we told you Monday, the local TV broadcast schedule is now set for 2009. Additionally, you can expect announcements regarding our English and Spanish radio deals in the next week.
  • As announced in the club's Weekly Update on Tuesday, David Kammarman has joined the Galaxy front office as our Director of Soccer Operations. In this role, which is markedly different than what Paul Bravo's role was during his tenure with the club, Kammarman will work closely with Bruce Arena and the Galaxy coaching staff in the areas of player personnel, scouting, talent evaluation, agent and MLS communication and Collective Bargaining Agreement compliance.
  • Bryan Jordan and Donovan Ricketts are each currently rehabbing from their foot and hamstring injuries, though neither injury is considered serious.
  • A big congratulations to our Team Chiropractor/Active Release Specialist Shunta Shimizu, whose wife gave birth to the couple's first child on Wednesday. Even with the birth of his daughter that morning, Shimizu still managed to make it to the stadium on time for the game against Oita that evening.

Tony Sanneh Ready For Oita

We caught up with Tony Sanneh after training to get his thoughts ahead of the Pan-Pacific Championship opener tomorrow night against Oita Trinita (8 p.m. on FSC) at The HDC.

Check out what Sanneh had to say about what could be his Galaxy debut.

In other Sanneh news, Tony informed us that the own goal that was credited to him in the scrimmage against Houston last week was actually scored by Leonard Griffin. At first Leo tried to say it wasn't him, saying that there was no video evidence, but after a bit of prodding, he admitted to providing the final touch.

Ready for Pan-Pacific

The build up to the Pan-Pacific Championship officially kicked off this afternoon at The Home Depot Center with the introductory press conference. All four teams were in attendance ahead of Wednesday's tournament openers between Suwon Samsung Bluewings (Korea) and Shandong Luneng (China) at 5:30 p.m. Then, at 8 p.m., the Galaxy take on one of Japan's top clubs, Oita Trinita. You can read more about the Galaxy's focus on the tournament in the words of Larry Morgan here. Bruce Arena Statement [UPDATED]

Galaxy General manager and Head Coach Bruce Arena has issued the following statement regarding the transfer rumors surrounding David Beckham...

“Today's deadline imposed by Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber regarding a resolution of David Beckham's potential transfer to AC Milan has passed and we did not receive an acceptable offer for the player. As a result, David remains an LA Galaxy player and we look forward to having him back with the club starting March 9.”

For more about this story, be sure to check out the story in the Los Angeles Times today by Grahame Jones, which was written following Milan's 2-1 defeat to Inter at the San Siro on Sunday.

Looking Back at the Viewing Party

While the blog staff was not able to make it down to ESPN Zone on Wednesday night for the U.S.-Mexico viewing party, we did hear great things about the event as about 300 Galaxy (and mostly U.S. fans) packed the lower level to witness the latest version of CONCACAF's best rivalry.
Everyone seemed to be on edge a bit as the game kicked off.But after Michael Bradley's opening goal, the decibel level increased significantly.
As the clock inched its way toward 90:00, the crowd grew louder and louder, culminating with the final whistle, which was greeted by a massive applause.
To make the night that much better, some lucky fans even left with signed Galaxy memorabilia and other good stuff.
And everyone was able to walk out happy, knowing that the U.S. now sits atop the CONCACAF standings and Mexico is rooted to the bottom following yet another 2-0 U.S. win in Columbus.

It was also Sean Franklin's first since undergoing bi-lateral sports hernia surgery last month. Franklin, the 2008 MLS Rookie of the Year, started the match and played 45 minutes.

Mexico-USA Viewing Party; LA Galaxy Training Notes

It's match day in Columbus. And, according to weather.com, it's raining! Perfect weather for the World Cup Qualifier between USA and Mexico at Crew Stadium, to be sure, but perfect viewing weather? We think not.

It's sunny here in Los Angeles and AEG and the LA Galaxy would like to invite you to a viewing party at EZPN Zone in at LA Live (Game is scheduled to kickoff at 4 p.m.). There will be free drawing for Galaxy prizes and appetizer specials.

Galaxy training notes.

  • Team had a short 11 v. 11 intrasquad game ahead of tomorrow's scrimmage against the Houston Dynamo. Franklin was playing right back.
  • After the intrasquad game, the guys broke up into groups of two. Chris Klein, Alan Gordon and Edson Buddle were in a group working on corner kicks.
  • Buddle and Gordon stayed on the field a bit longer to work on finishing. Could the duo be working on a secret play for PPC?
  • David Beckham came on as a second half substitute for Stewart Downing and equaled Booby Moore's record of 108 caps with the national team during England's international friendly in Seville against Euro 2008 Champion Spain.
  • Lastly, the club made their first cuts of the preseason: defenders Vardan Adzemian, Leo Bautista, Mike Gavin and midfielder Mike Muñoz. The roster is now down to 33 players.

As most soccer fans know, tomorrow will be a big as Landon Donovan the U.S. takes on Mexico in a World Cup Qualifier in Columbus, Ohio (4 p.m. (PT) on ESPN2 and Univision).

Bruce, Cobi, Eddie Lewis and Tony Sanneh have all played major roles in past U.S.-Mexico games and Larry Morgan caught up with them recently to discuss the rivalry for a piece that you can read here.

Also, last year while we were in Seoul, the site of the U.S. draw with Korea in the 2002 World Cup, we spoke with Cobi to get his thoughts on that tournament and specifically the win over Mexico.

LA Galaxy Legend Mauricio Cienfuegos, former assistant coach Ralph Perez and these guys were also here.

The match featured the debut of the Sounders, but also our new training top.

Under A Dark Gray Sky

It has been a busy 24-48 hours here at The Home Depot Center, but the players were unfazed as they headed back out onto the field for training this morning. Thick clouds covered the field throughout the session, keeping the temperatures down and the intensity up.
As far as the situation with David Beckham, the club did not have any comment on the story on Wednesday as the players and coaches were on the field training when the story broke, but here is what Bruce Arena had to say this afternoon about Becks, the Pan-Pacific Championship and his first preseason in charge of the Galaxy.

Additionally, he spoke to Larry Morgan of MLSnet.com and lagalaxy.com. Check out Larry's story here. Also be sure to catch all of Larry's past pieces from throughout the preseason. So far he has caught up with players like Tristan Bowen, Dema Kovalenko, Leo Bautista and many more as the Galaxy's 2009 roster continues to take shape.

Super Bowl Soothsayers [UPDATED]

Before all of the guys left for the weekend on Friday, we made sure to ask them what their predictions were for the tonight's Super Bowl. Here's how their picks broke down.

  • 19 players picked the Cardinals to win while 13 chose the Steelers.
  • Ian Feuer was the only coach to pick the Cardinals, but every member of the team staff (equipment managers and medical team) picked Arizona.
  • Kyle Patterson had the lowest scoring game (14-3 Steelers) and Brandon McDonald had the highest scoring game (35-28 Cardinals).
  • Three of the Galaxy's players were raised in Arizona, Mike Gavin, Alan Gordon and Brandon McDonald. All three picked Arizona to win the game.
  • Donovan Ricketts said that he doesn't follow the NFL and he'd been in the country for just a few days, but that did not stop him from giving his vote to the Steelers.
  • Most of the guys who picked Pittsburgh went with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to be the MVP, with Santonio Holmes, Troy Polamalu, Willie Parker, Heath Miller and the entire Pittsburgh Defense all getting single votes.
  • For those who picked the Cardinals, 11 said that Kurt Warner would be the MVP while 10 went with Larry Fitzgerald. One person gave the award to Steve Breaston and one said that Dominique Rogers-Cromartie would claim the MVP award.

The game kicks off in just a little while, so let's see who might have a future career in sports prognostication.

While nobody picked the exact score, plaudits have to go out to a few different people.

  • Congrats to Mike Magee who was the only one top say that Santonio Holmes would win the MVP award.
  • Congrats to Trevor James who was the closest to hitting the exact number of points scored in the game. Trev predicted a 36-13 Steeler win, leaving him one point off of the 50 points scored in the game.
  • Ian Feuer, Eddie Lewis, Dema Kovalenko, Dave Sarachan and Josh Wicks all predicted a four-point margin of victory, with Eddie, Dema and Dave all calling the game for Pittsburgh.
  • Lastly, we'll give credit to Chris Klein for calling a 26-21 Steeler win, leaving him just one point off the Steelers final score and two off of Arizona's. Additionally, he guessed that the MVP award would go to the Steelers Defense, which it very well could have following James Harrison's Super Bowl record 100-yard interception return.
