Edson Buddle was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 6 of the 2010 MLS season. Buddle supplied two goals and one assist in the Galaxy’s 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, May 1 at The Home Depot Center. This is Buddle’s second Player of the Week honor in 2010.
After supplying each of the Galaxy’s first seven goals this season, Buddle notched his first assist of the season just 53 seconds into the team’s match on Saturday. Galaxy midfielder Michael Stephens played the ball through to Buddle just outside the penalty area. He took a touch and played the ball across the goalmouth to A.J. DeLaGarza, who sent a sliding shot past Union goalkeeper Chris Seitz.
Buddle resumed his scoring prowess in the 27th minute. After Seitz saved a diving header from Galaxy forward Alan Gordon, Buddle picked up the rebound, attempted a back heel shot which was deflected by the defense, and then buried the ball with his follow-up shot.
Buddle earned his fourth multi-goal game of the season as he scored again in the 45th minute. Just before halftime, midfielder Landon Donovan received a pass from Stephens and took off down the right side of the field. Donovan played the ball through to Buddle at the top of the penalty area and Buddle finished for his second goal of the night.
With nine goals and one assist, Buddle has been involved in all of the Galaxy’s 10 goals this season as the club remains at the top of the league standings with a 5-0-1 record.
This is Buddle’s ninth career Player of the Week award and fourth since joining the Galaxy in 2007. He was also named Player of the Month for April.
