The U.S. Men’s National Team fell 3-1 to defending world champion Italy to open the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Galaxy forward Landon Donovan scored a penalty kick for the USA just before the half to give them a 1-0 advantage, despite being down a man since Ricardo Clark's 33rd minute red card. However, the Azzurri would not be denied in the second half with two goals from New Jesery native Giuseppe Rossi (58' and 94'+) and one from Daniele De Rossi (72').
